GameSir G8 Galileo Review Type-C Wired Mobile Gaming Controller

Tuesday, December 12, 2023

GameSir G8 Galileo stands out as an excellent mobile gaming controller, particularly for specific games. Its ergonomic design, replaceable joysticks, and superb build quality make it a standout product, with potential for further enhancements in color variety and connectivity options for a broader gaming platform.

The GameSir G8 Galileo mobile gaming controller is easy to set up, with compatibility extending to most Android devices and the iPhone 15 series, although it's recommended to use the G8 without a case for optimal performance. One of the standout features is the Hall Effect Joysticks and Hall Trigger, providing precise 360° control and unparalleled smoothness during gameplay - similar to the Gamesir T4 Cyclone Pro and Gamesir G7. In practical terms, this translates into a competitive edge, especially evident in titles like 'Sonic Dream Team' and 'Resident Evil Village,' where the ergonomic design and responsiveness of the controller enhance longer gaming sessions.

The movable Type-C port ensures a dependable connection, contributing to the overall smoothness and reliability of the gaming experience. Pass-through charging and the inclusion of a 3.5mm audio jack are practical additions, allowing uninterrupted gameplay while charging the device and using preferred headphones.

Magnetic detachable faceplates bring a touch of personalization, allowing you to switch them out effortlessly and keep their gaming setup fresh. On-the-fly mappings add to the customization options, offering quick in-game adjustments without the need for additional software.

The G8 Galileo's compatibility extends to various platforms, including Xbox, PlayStation, and PC games. It supports Xbox Game Pass, PS Remote Play, Steam Link, NVIDIA GeForce Now, and Amazon Luna. The controller's versatility is further enhanced by the inclusion of extra thumbsticks and the option to use both wired and wireless Bluetooth headphones.

From a practical standpoint, the anti-friction glide rings and non-contact magnetic sensors in the Hall Effect sticks ensure durability and prevent stick drift, contributing to a longer lifespan of the controller. The user manual note about the default Android mode and the need to activate PlayStation Mode for iPhone users adds clarity and prevents potential issues. Speaking of practicality, the G8 Galileo controller can stand upright (vertically) by itself (without a phone), which is useful to protect the thumbsticks from dust ingress. Overall dimensions are 21.5cm long x 11cm deep x 5cm high. Dimensions of the rubberized cradle area 10.5cm long x 7cm wide. Weight is 253 grams.

In terms of build quality, the G8 Galileo controller looks and feels quality. It is mostly made of smooth plastic, including the d-pad, face buttons, rear buttons, textured triggers/bumpers and textured grips. The cradle area is made of thick soft rubber. Removable and replaceable joysticks make maintenance easy, adding to the overall durability of the device. However, it's worth noting that the color options are limited, and future versions could potentially include features like rumble feedback, a built-in battery, and expanded Bluetooth connectivity.

In summary, the GameSir G8 Galileo sets itself apart as a reliable and user-friendly mobile gaming controller with exceptional real-life performance. Its standout features, including the Hall Effect Joysticks and movable Type-C port, contribute to an enhanced gaming experience.

One area for improvement, it's explaining in the user manual that the G8 Galileo is set to Android mode (green (LEDs) by default. If you want to use an iPhone, you first have to activate PlayStation Mode (white LEDs). To do this, cycle through to the third mode (White/PS) by holding down the top two buttons (View and Menu) at the same time.
