TOZO Golden X1 Earbuds Review: Hybrid Marmony!

Tuesday, August 01, 2023

Say hello to the golden era of earbuds with the TOZO Golden X1 wireless earbuds, where every beat and melody shines with brilliance. This review delves into the real-life performance of these earbuds, highlighting their standout features, including active noise cancellation (ANC), call quality, and the overall user experience.

The TOZO Golden X1 are hybrid earbuds utilizing a 12mm dynamic driver with a Knowles balanced armature driver design to achieve their distinctive IEM-like sound signature - a wide immersive soundstage with clear trebles and robust bass. The active noise cancellation (ANC) feature of the TOZO Golden X1 earbuds works impressively well, effectively reducing external noises so, you can enjoy your music without distractions.

As well as ANC, the earbuds feature a three other listening modes: Transparent Mode,  Leisure Mode and Wind Mode, which can be enabled via the TOZO app. The TOZO app features soothing ambient sounds, battery level indicator for each earbud, hearing test and 10-band EQ with 16 customizable presets. The TOZO app doesn't require you to sign up for an account and, it's easy to navigate.
During calls, there is also noise filtration, which works well at reducing external noises during calls. The mic quality is slightly quieter than some other models, but it captures voices accurately and naturally.

Made entirely of smooth matte plastic with a metal gold accented nozzle tip, the TOZO Golden X1 earbuds fit comfortably in the ears. Despite the dual driver design, the Golden X1 buds are relatively compact and don't stick out excessively. The fit feels secure too, thanks to the short stem design, which anchors inside the ear notch. Additionally, the Golden X1 high a waterproof rating (IPX6) making them ideal for indoor gym workouts or outdoor activities in the rain like jogging.

The X1 charging case has the same smooth matte plastic construction as the earbuds with old accent branding laser etched on top of the lid. Speaking of the lid, it has one of those wobbly hinge lids. The USB-C charging port is rear facing, while on front you find a battery led bar reminiscent of Knight Rider's car light bar. Inside the case, you find a digital battery display. There are also status leds on the earbuds but these don't blink or flash after connection when listening to audio.

As far as user controls, the Golden X1 have highly responsive touch controls for controlling volume, track skipping, calls, voice assistant and ANC. You can only choose four functions per earbud via four gestures: single tap, double tap, triple tap and long press. The single tap gesture is no remappable but you can remap the other gestures with different functions. You can also disable gestures.

Pairing and connecting the TOZO Golden X1 earbuds is a breeze, supporting three codecs: SBC, AAC, and LDAC. The convenience doesn't end there; you can effortlessly connect the earbuds while they're in the case, eliminating the need to take them out. Furthermore, powering off the earbuds is as simple as placing them back in the case, no lid closure required.

The seamless transition between mono and stereo listening ensures no delay, and reconnection happens instantly, perfect for quickly answering incoming calls. As for the charging case, it measures 6.5cm in length, 4cm in width, and 3.5cm in height, weighing 47 grams (without earbuds). Each earbud weighs a mere 5.5 grams, ensuring a comfortable and lightweight fit.

The battery life of the TOZO Golden X1 earbuds is satisfactory, although not as long-lasting as some other earbuds in the market. When using the SBC audio codec at 50% volume, you can enjoy 5 hours of playback with ANC ON and 8 hours with ANC OFF. However, enabling LDAC reduces the battery life by almost 50%.

Charging the Golden X1 earbuds and case takes approximately 2 hours, and unfortunately, quick charging is not supported. On the bright side, the TOZO Golden X1 earbuds offer wireless charging compatibility, allowing you to use a standard 5W or 7.5W wireless charger. Wireless charging takes approximately 3.5 hours to fully recharge the earbuds and case. It's worth noting that Qi fast wireless chargers are not supported for this model.

In conclusion, the TOZO Golden X1 wireless earbuds deliver an immersive sound experience with impressive active noise cancellation and call performance. Their superb sound quality, premium looks and comfy design makes them perfect for commuting or office work purposes. While the microphone output during calls may be slightly quieter, the overall comfort, design, and functionality of these earbuds make them a worthwhile investment. For those seeking a premium wireless earbud experience, the TOZO Golden X1 earbuds undoubtedly stand out as a top contender.
