Joby Wavo Boom Arm Review Microphone Desk Mount With Articulating Arms

Wednesday, March 08, 2023

Make your podcast content creation more efficient and convenient with the Joby Wavo Boom Arm - a microphone desk mount with articulating arms that helps keep your desktop neat! It allows you to quickly deploy and retreat the microphone in and out of your face in seconds!

The Joby Wavo Boom Arm consists of two main parts: two articulating (boom) arms and a desk clamp mount, which is entirely made of solid metal. The desk clamp mount it's a 3-in-1 solution - a cup holder, headphone hanger and C-clamp attached together via three removable hex screw heads. The C-clamp screw integrates a metal swivel head (foam padded) at one end, and a large plastic thumb knob at the other end for tightening.

Removing the hex screws allows you to detach the cup/headphone holder assembly from the C-clamp. This makes the desk mount a lot cleaner and less bulk on a desk by only using the mounting base of the C-clamp. One drawback though, it requires having to drill a hole through the desk.

The Joby Wavo Boom Arm articulating arms consists of a solid metal inner frame, plastic panel outer shell, adjustable springs and moveable joints to form a spring loaded articulating mechanism to swing the arms open at different angles.

There are a total of 3 rotating joints, although one of them is fixed (non-moving). The tensioning of the arms can be manually adjusted to suit heavy and lightweight microphones such as the Joby Wavo POD

You can also mount a DSLR camera up to 1kg payload such as the Nikon D850 (950 grams), Canon EOS 7D Mark II (910 grams), Nikon D500 (860 grams), Canon 6D Mark II (770 grams) and Nikon 5300 (530 grams). Heavier cameras such as Nikon D5 (1.4kg) and Canon EOS-1D (1.6kg) are too heavy for Joby Wavo Boom Arm to hold. The 3Dio microphone seen pictured weighs 680 grams.

The Joby Wavo Boom Arm uses a tripod style ball head with a detachable 1/4 inch screw to mount a microphone or camera. The ball head can be detached from the boom arms. Inside the box, you also find two threaded adapters (1/4 inch to 5/8 inch and 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch) to accommodate different size microphones.

The ball head and screw mount are made of metal, while the thumb knob is made of plastic. The ball head can be rotated 360 degrees on its axis, as well as tilted up and down up to 180 degrees.

Dimensions of the Joby Wavo Boom Arm articulating arms are 80cm long fully extended, and 40cm long fully retracted. the weight is 1.2kg. Each arm measures 40cm long x 5.5cm wide x 2cm thick. The tripod ball head measures 8cm tall. The headphone cup holder/ g-clamp bracket weighs 902 grams and measures 18cm tall x 18cm deep x 10cm wide. The inner diameter of the cup holder is 8cm. The C-clamp can accommodate a maximum desk thickness between 7cm and 1.5cm.
