House Of Marley One Drop Review Bamboo Coaster Wireless Charger

Wednesday, August 17, 2022

Cable is king but wireless charging is way more convenient! The newest product in the House of Marley lineup, it's a wireless charger - One Drop - named appropriately after Bob Marley's One Drop song from his 1979 Survival album!

The House Of Marley One Drop wireless charger has a coaster design and, it is made of the same bamboo and silicone (rubber) material used for other House Of Marley products including the Redemption ANC 2 earbuds, Stir It Up wireless turntable and Get Together Duo speakers. The One Drop wireless charger comes with two accessories: a silicone cable tie and the new REWIND charging cable (USB-A to USB-C) - which was also recently released alongside the One Drop wireless charger seen pictured.

The top section of the House Of Marley One Drop wireless charger measures 8.5cm in diameter and,it is made of a thick layer bamboo with House Of Marley logo black chrome plating. The bottom section is made of thick silicone rubber and features a recessed USB-C charging port and status led which pulses white during charging and turns off when charging is complete. The height (thickness) of the One Drop charger is 1.5cm and the weight is 69 grams.

The REWIND charging cable can be bought separately too and, it is also available with a male to male USB-C to USB-C connection. That said, the REWIND charging cable that is included with the One drop charger isn't the 3 meter version being sold on House Of Marley's website. The REWIND cable you get with the One Drop charger is 1.1 meters and weighs 22 grams. It has a premium feel though. It is made of stiff fabric and rubberized plugs with Marley branding.

The House Of Marley One Drop wireless charger is compatible with true wireless earbuds charging cases (up to 5 watt), iPhones (up to 7.5 watt) and Android phones/tablets up to 10 watts. The House Of Marley One Drop wireless charger does not support fast wireless charging; hence you won't be able to fast wireless charge the newer MagSafe iPhones (iPhone 12 and iPhone 13) which support fast wireless charging speeds of 15 watts.

Despite not support fast wireless charging, you can still use the House Of Marley One Drop wireless charger to wireless charge an iPhone 12 or iPhone 13 but at lower speeds capped to 7.5 watts. Android phones also support fast wireless charging, anywhere from 12 watt (e.g Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10), 15 watt (e.g. Galaxy Note 10+) and 30 watt (OnePlus 8 Pro).

Wireless charging times depends on your phone's battery (mAh) capacity and charging technology. But, to give you an idea the House Of Marley One Drop 10W wireless charger can charge a phone wirelessly from 0% to 100% in about 2 hours (give or take). Charging via cable via a 10W power adapter will be twice as quick though - about 1 hour.

Potential deal breakers
  • More suited for iPhone owners who own an older iPhone that supports maximum wireless charging of 7.5 watts. This includes iPhones up to the iPhone 11 series (e.g. iPhone 7 and iPhone SE) capped at 7.5 watt. The iPhone 12 series and newer support 15 watts.
  • Not suitable for phones with a thick heavy-duty case
  • Cannot use and charge a phone simultaneously (like with cable charging). This is the same drawback with wireless charging as a whole.
  • Won't work with a phone case that holds credit cards or RFID cards (same drawback with all wireless chargers). In fact, the credit/debit card black strip can actually get damaged when exposed to inductive wireless charging.

  • Wireless charging is not as efficient as cable charging - about 30% of power is lost due to the induction wireless charging process.Wireless charging is slower than cable charging (same drawback with all wireless chargers)
  • Power adapter is not included. You will need to use your own or buy one - preferably a 15 watt adapter to mitigate the conversion power loss during wireless charging. A 12 watt power adapter works but doesn't provide the most optimal performance.
  • The REWIND charging cable does not support audio or data and, it is shorter than the one sold on House of Marley's website.
  • The coaster design isn't as versatile as the wireless charging stand design.
  • The status led light flashes during charging
