Outdoor Vitals Rhyolite Internal Frame Hiking Backpack With Rainfly

Thursday, April 25, 2019

From "tactical" style to traditional backpacks, all backpacks certainly have their place. The Outdoor Vitals Rhyolite is a traditional backpack with a multitude of useful features such as an internal high grade T6 aluminum frame that provides rigidity and support during multiple day backpacking trips.
The Outdoor Vitals Rhyolite is a well thought out backpack that addresses most backpackers wants in a backpack, including solid frame structure for multi-day treks, back ventilation for serious hiking, good weight distribution across the body and price compared to big brand name backpacks which cost the same but don't offer the same features.

Simple and functional features like the full length side zip on the Outdoor Vitals Rhyolite backpack means you don't have to dig through the top of the backpack to get what you need at the bottom.

You can also attach things to the outside of the Outdoor Vitals Rhyolite backpack via the daisy chain bumpy strips located on either side of the backpack. The Rhyolite backpack's daisy chain strips feature three webbing loops, as well as an adjustable drawstring bungee cord for attaching other things.
There is space also for water bottles (or a tripod) on the over-sized elastic side pockets of the Rhyolite backpack.
You can even fit a hydration bladder pack inside the Rhyolite backpack and run the bladder tube via a pass through opening on the neck of the backpack and through the dedicated bladder pocket on the shoulder strap.
The hydration bladder pack stays secured inside an internal pocket, while two small velcro straps on top secure the tubing.
On the front of the Rhyolite backpack, you find a 19-inch long reverse coil water resistant zipper that leads to a roomy front compartment with elastic mesh pockets where you can neatly store small items such as power banks, phones, wallets and pen knives.
The side zip is one way to gain access but you can also gain access into the main compartment from the top enclosure which uses a different closure mechanism.
The top enclosure uses a double drawstring closure system that consists of two sets of drawstring cuffs with a longer inner drawstring cuff that allows the bag to be expanded upwards, letting you fit more into the backpack.
Another trick the Rhyolite backpack has up its sleeve is a clever waist bag conversion that utilizes the hood of the backpack as a fanny pack (a.k.a belt bag, waist bag or waist pack).
The hood/ waist pack conversion fits securely around your waist via an adjustable side release buckle strap located on the inner side of the hood. The side release buckle strap can be adjusted to fit waists up to 100cm (3ft) in size.
To make the funny pack conversion even more versatile, you can even attach the removable hip pockets from the waist belt strap and turn them into useful holsters.
The sides of the Rhyolite backpack waist belt also feature velcro style holsters that allow for a fast draw of a tool.
There are a total of two zippers on the Rhyolite backpack hood. One zipper is located on the exterior of the hood, while a smaller zipper is located internally.
The hood itself has four small side release buckles and one ladderlock buckle strap to adjust the hood so you can make the hood fit snugly over the backpack so it won't hang down the front.
The Rhyolite backpack can really pack a lot and comfortably thanks to its weight support and distribution system that allows you to increase the load without compromising your back.
You get a couple of inches of firm but flexible foam padding on the upper section of the shoulder straps and on the waist belt.

The Rhyolite backpack features an adjustable torso suspension system that consists of a velcro fastener in the upper section of the shoulder straps that lets you detached the shoulder straps from the main body of the backpack. You can then adjust the shoulder straps via different webbing loops sewn into the back of the backpack to suit heights from 5' 3'' to 6' 5''.
The Rhyolite shoulder strap velcro system is also designed to pivot so the shoulder straps move up and down with the movements of your shoulders when you are hiking.
After buckling up the waist belt and chest (sternum) strap, you can quickly adjust the hip belt and sternum strap on the go via "pull forward" straps that make compressing the hip belt and chest strap easy and convenient.
The waist belt measures 69cm long (side to side) and 15cm wide.
The Rhyolite backpack has close to 20 YKK plastic buckles in total, combining side release buckles, ladderlocks and a set of tri glide buckles on either side of the sternum strap allowing you to easily slide the chest strap up and down for comfort.
There are also easy-to-pull load lifter straps on the upper section of the Rhyolite shoulder straps designed to bring the top section of the backpack closer to your back so the backpack can sit snugly on your backside.
On the sides of the Rhyolite backpack you also find compression straps with a side release buckle sewn to the backpack at a fixed 45 degree angle. These compression straps help pull the weight up and into your backside, keeping the backpack from feeling like it's pulling you over backwards.
On the bottom of the Rhyolite backpack you find a zipper compartment, concealing a 2000mm waterproof rain cover with a drawstring edge that allows you to firmly secure the rain cover (rainfly) around the backpack without it slipping off.
The rain cover weighs 99 grams and it's attached to the backpack via a ladder lock buckle strap, which allows you to remove the rain cover completely off the backpack.
The 600 denier polyester fabric material of the Rhyolite backpack has a 1500mm waterproof coating which coupled with the 2000mm waterproof rain cover can protect the backpack from many hours of moderate rain.
The foam padding on the back of the Rhyolite is positioned strategically into three sections to allow for efficient back ventilation.
The back padding also fully supports the lower back and the area down your neck, along the spine to about the middle of your back and across your shoulder blade. The foam padding is thick and raised allowing proper back ventilation for serious hiking.
The Rhyolite 60 liter internal frame hiking backpack is more suited for long torsos (21 inches and above). The 60 liter Rhyolite backpack weighs 2.1 kilograms and measures 64cm high (deep) and 30cm wide, and can expand outwards up to 28cm.
The 40 liter Ryolite backpack version weighs 1.9 kilograms and has smaller dimensions that are more suited for smaller torsos (18 inches and below).
