Edifier R1010BT 4-inch Bookshelf Ceramic Paper Cone Speakers

Tuesday, April 17, 2018

The R1010BT speakers by Edifier are a good example of studio monitor speakers that let you hear sound exactly as it was recorded in the studio which is ideal if you want accurate displays of music just as the sound engineers intended.
What's neat about the Edifier R1010BT speaker system is that one of the speakers is passive while the other one is an active speaker which is powered via an electrical socket.
wire clip
The passive speaker connects to the active speaker via a 2.5 meter-long color-coded twin cable that clips into the wire clips on the back of the speaker units,
Having one of the speakers powered is great because you get two power amplifiers built into the speaker cabinet so the bass speaker and tweeter handle their own audio frequencies individually. This really makes a difference in the quality of the audio and makes the overall sound much better because you get punchy highs and mids, and superb bass.
Edifier R1010BT frequency response 70Hz-20KHz
The tweeter drivers integrated in the R1010BT studio monitor speakers are 13 mm in size and kind of exotic as they are made of silk. Both the tweeter and woofer drivers effectively deliver the high and low frequencies without noticeable distortion at medium/high volume.
The bass drivers are 4-inch in size and use paper cones, which may sound surprising but most high-end speakers use paper cones for their speakers.
Believe it or not, paper cone speakers sound great! Manufactures impregnate (or dope) the paper with kevlar, fiberglass, titanium, aluminum, gold or ceramic such as in the case of the Edifier R1010BT 4-inch woofers.

Paper is actually a very underrated material, even though it's light and rigid which is perfect in the making of speaker diaphragms which usually have a cone shape; hence the term "speaker cones". Whichever the material used in the making of speakers, the result is all that matters and the R1010BT speakers are super sounding with powerful, clear sound response.

Paper speaker cones that are treated do last longer so the R1010BT speakers being coated with ceramic should easily last 8 years or more specially since the speaker surrounds are made of rubber instead of foam which degrades quicker.
The R1010BT speaker housing is made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) using real wood composite so you're getting wood housing similar to particle board, but much denser and stronger than particle board.
The R1010BT speakers deliver a total of 24W RMS of power and can connect up to two Bluetooth devices simultaneously which is great as this enables you to connect your desktop computer and phone at the same time.
The included 3.5mm male audio cable to RCA is 1.7 meters long and lets you hook up the Edifier R1010BT active speaker to a smartphone or another 3.5mm audio source. Included is also a 10 cm long RCA audio cable with a 3.5 mm female socket.
The volume control knob is also a button which lets you select between line-in input or Bluetooth 4.0 input. To switch back from Bluetooth connection to line-in, you need to hold down the volume knob for a few seconds.
The led indicator is located on the active speaker and shows solid green during wired connection, and solid blue during bluetooth connection. It's nice that you get a dedicated on/off power switch and separate bass and volume knobs to adjust the bass and sound levels.
On the back of the active speaker, you also find dual RCA stereo inputs which let you hook up the R1010BT speakers into the pre-outs of an old stereo AV amplifier.
The line-in A RCA ports feature active electronics that automatically enhances the treble frequency. This makes the sound output slightly higher and clearer compared to the line-in B ports and Bluetooth connection.
Edifier R1010BT signal to noise ratio 85dB
5mm high rubber feet
The line-in A input sensitivity is 700mV±50mV, while the line-in B input sensitivity is 500mV±50mV and 400mV±50mFFS for Bluetooth.
Speakers such as the Edifier R1010BT go by different names such as creative reference multimedia monitors, studio monitor speakers, bookshelf speakers and studio monitors.
Whichever the name, the Edifier R1010BT powered speakers compliment a laptop or desktop setup for watching YouTube videos, movies, playing games or listening to music. The size is pretty compact too measuring only 15.2 cm wide, 17.7 cm deep and 22.8 cm high. The speakers total weigh is just 5 kg.
